Adobe has released software patches that need to be used in conjunction with the dot releases. These patches contain fixes to the Adobe software.
What Are MA’s
MA’s are patches or fixes to Adobe bugs that have been submitted by DTI engineers and other Adobe partners. Not all patches are released through the Adobe online update process. In fact, if you are using this process you are missing updates or applying updates designed for single user workflows and not multi user workflow. MA’s are released through partners like DTI and are tested by our QA team.
There are two types of MA’s. A script used to update the 2.0 versions of InDesign and InCopy (DTI versions 5.4.X and 5.5.X.) The CS2 version is a ‘AppBundle’ and is applied as an installer for DTI versions 6.X, (See below)
Both contain readme or release notes with details of changes or fixes. They also contain a two .txt files that we use to compare and verify that the MA’s have been applied correctly. These files are called ‘ICWinUpdateConfig.txt’ and ‘IDWinUpdateConfig.txt’ which will need to be uploaded to the database and are explained in the instructions.
5.4.x and 5.5.x be sure to download the 2.0 MA
If you are a 5.4.x or 5.5.x customer upgrading to this MA, be sure to download the 2.0 MA.
Afterwards unzip or unstuff the AdobeUpdateInstaller script.
The AdobeUpdateInstaller folder must be placed on the same level as InDesign and/or InCopy folders within your DTApps Upload folder. The Adobe folders and applications must be named InDesign and InCopy, respectively. No version number or additional wording should appear in the application or folder name.
NOTE: Spaces, versions, or the word 'Adobe' will cause problems in launching the software.
NOTE: On Windows, the applications (or .exe) should already be named just InDesign.exe and InCopy.exe
Open the AdobeUpdateInstaller folder and simply doubleclick on the AdobeUpdateCopyUtility.bat on Windows machines.
For Macintosh, doubleclick on the AdobeUpdateCopyUtility applescript application. The patches will be applied to the InDesign and InCopy folders residing within your DTApps folders. These updates will need to be up loaded to the database. Launch SpeedManger | Setups (menu) > Application Uploader, select root (the '/') and click ADD
Path to the DTApps Upload folder which contains the InDesign and InCopy folders and upload these folders to the database. Select both folders (not the contents, but the folders themselves), and click the SELECT button.
When InDesign and InCopy have loaded, select 'root' (the '/') again and click ADD
Path to the Upload folder which contains the 'DTFiles' (The DTFiles are the contents of the NewsSpeed folder that came with the release. Select all the files within the 'DTFiles' folder and click the SELECT button. When DTFiles have loaded, select 'root' (the '/') again and click ADD
NOTE: These Adobe patch configuration files are named IDWinUpdateConfig.txt, ICWinUpdateConfig.txt, IDMacUpdateConfig.txt and ICMacUpdateConfig.txt and are found in the root level of the DT Applications folder. They need to be uploaded in the Application Uploader using the Upload File command (you may load them one at a time, or Command or Control select 2 files and upload them). The new Flight Data Recorder plugin looks for the Update Config files and reports if they are not there on launch of an Adobe application. If/when you receive a new Adobe Update Master Archive, these files (IDWinUpdateConfig.txt, ICWinUpdateConfig.txt, IDMacUpdateConfig.txt and ICMacUpdateConfig.txt) will need to be updated at that time, or the user workstations will report incorrect plugin versions on launch.
Path to the MA install folder\SManager-Put in NewsSpeed folder. This contains the two .txt files. (‘ICWinUpdateConfig.txt’ and ‘IDWinUpdateConfig.’) Select these files and click the SELECT button.
When the upload has finished, click OK to close Application Uploader. <End>
This process should replace the old files you have. All DT software builds dated September 11, 2003 or later have a new feature that detects if the Adobe Patches are installed on the workstation, and reports an error when they are not. The error will list the first item that is missing.

6.X - Be sure to download the CS2 MA
Things to know about loading a new CS MA’s:
A) - To load the Adobe MA, you must do so on a machine that either has a fresh install of InDesign and InCopy CS2, or one which the applications have never been launched outside of the DTApps folder. (This is because Adobe delivers the MA as an AppBundle and not individual files like they did in the 2.x product.) B) - When you install the Adobe applications, the Adobe Installer will default to Program Files/Adobe. We suggest you install to this default location even though Windows writes to the Registry regardless. (When the MA is being installed, it reads from the Registry.
However, on the Mac when you are given a choice of where to install, you MUST INSTALL TO THE APPLICATIONS FOLDER as this is the default location which the MA's will install to.
C) After the MA is installed to InDesign and InCopy to the locations indicated above, you will make copies of those InDesign and InCopy folders so that they can be renamed and loaded to the database. Further nstructions below.
D) The 'DTFiles' folder will be loaded as a whole into Application Uploader (not broken up and put into InDesign and InCopy folders in Application Uploader).
E) If you are installing these applications on a brand new database, first load the Adobe Applications, then NewsSpeed and then load DTFiles.
*DO NOT DELETE EXISTING DTFILES, INDESIGN or INCOPY folders if they have been previously loaded to the database.
When NewsSpeed is loaded, it places a folder called 'DT' inside of InDesign and INCopy's Plugin folders. It also ads files to the DTFiles folder. If you were to take an existing database, and delete the DTFiles folder, InDesign and InCopy, you will be wiping out the files and folders that NewsSpeed has put there. You will also have to re-do the 'associations'.
If you have 'accidently' done this, it's easy enough to get out of it - just reload NewsSpeed after you have finished with the MA process.
Loading a new MA:
-On PC -
Unzip the Adobe MA zip file (example: ID668IC668MacFixes..zip) - In this folder you will see InDesign, InCopy and Update folders as well as Release Notes.
Open the InDesign Folder and then double click IDCS2_Updater_Roman_Release.exe (name may be different depending on MA release)
Go through the MA installer - this will update the InDesign CS2 with the latest fixes.
Open the InCopy Folder and then double click ICCS2_Updater_Roman_Release.exe (name may be different depending on MA release)
At the same level as the InDesign and InCopy folders, you should see a folder called 'Upload', inside that is a folder called 'DTFiles'.
(This DTFILES folder the same folder that is in the Newspeed folder, which contents you generally upload to SpeedManager using Application Uploader when you update your database.) This file contains the configuration information for the MA that you are running. Loading this entire folder to 'root' or '/' in Application Uploader, along with InDesign and InCopy with the newly applied MA, will get rid of the 'Plugins Out of Date' error you see when logging into DTApps. (This process will be done at the end of this check list)
Create a new folder named 'Upload'' in your DTApps folder or in Program Files - (or path to the existing Upload folder if you have one.)
Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe and select the folders: Adobe InDesign CS2 and Adobe InCopy CS2 and COPY and paste them into the Upload folder
NOTE: Again, do NOT launch these applications. They should be loaded into the database in a pre-launch state.
Go to the Adobe MA folder that you unzipped (example: ID668IC668MacFixes) and COPY the DTFiles folder, PASTE it into the Upload folder
Rename the Adobe InDesign CS2 and Adobe InCopy CS2 folders in the Upload folder to 'InDesign' and 'InCopy', respectively.
NOTE: Spaces, versions, or the word 'Adobe' will cause problems in launching the software.
NOTE: On Windows, the applications (or .exe) should already be named just InDesign.exe and InCopy.exe
Go into the InCopy folder and Remove InCopyFileActions.apln plug-in from InCopy/Plugins/UI. The database will download the correct plug-in, ICDTFileActions.pln, when launching.
Remove the Online folder from InDesign/Plugins
Remove the Online folder from InCopy/Plugins
Launch SpeedManger, go into Setups > Application Uploader, select root (the '/') and click ADD
Path to the Upload folder which contains the InDesign and InCopy folders that you had made copies of, select both folders (not the contents, but the folders themselves), and click the SELECT button
When InDesign and InCopy have loaded, select 'root' (the '/') again and click ADD
Path to the Upload folder which contains the 'DTFiles' folder that came zipped with the MA. Select the 'DTFiles' folder and click the SELECT button
When the upload has finished, click OK to close Application Uploader. <end>
-On Mac -
Double click the .dmg (example: ID668IC668MacFixes.dmg) and it will mount on your hard drive.
Select the InDesign Folder and then double click InDesign Updater.dmg
When the InDesign Updater.dmg mounts, select it then double click on the InDesign Updater file to launch the install of the InDesign MA.
A dialog comes up that askes you to choose which InDesign to install the MA to. YOU MUST CHOOSE THE INDESIGN IN THE APPLICATIONS FOLDER.
Run the install
Unmount the InDesign Updater.dmg when install is complete.
Select the main .dmg file again and go into the InCopy folder
Double click InCopy Updater.dmg
When the InCopy Updater.dmg mounts, select it then double click on the InCopy Updater file to launch the install of the InCopy MA.
A dialog comes up that askes you to choose which InCopy to install the MA to. YOU MUST CHOOSE THE INDESIGN IN THE APPLICATIONS FOLDER.
Run the install
Unmount the InCopy Updater.dmg when install is complete.
At the same level as the InDesign and InCopy folders, you should see a folder called 'Upload', inside that is a folder called 'DTFiles'.
(This is the same folder that is in the Newspeed folder, which contents you generally upload to SpeedManager using Application Uploader when you update your database.)This file contains the configuration information for the MA that you are running. Loading this folder to 'root' or '/' in Application Uploader, along with InDesign and InCopy with the newly applied MA, will get rid of the 'Plugins Out of Date' error you see when logging into DTApps. (This process will be done at the end of this check list)
Create a new folder named 'Update' in your Home directory (or path to the existing Update folder if you have one.)
NOTE: Again, do NOT launch these applications. They should be loaded into the database in a pre-launch state.
Go to your Applications folder and Select and Copy the Adobe InDesign CS2 and Adobe InCopy CS2, paste them into the Upload folder
Go to the mounted image (the .dmg) and copy the DTFiles folder, paste it into the Upload folder
Rename the Adobe InDesign CS2 and Adobe InCopy CS2 folders in the upload folder to 'InDesign' and 'InCopy', respectively.
NOTE: If you are hiding extentions in the OS, the .app will be hidden. If you are hsowing extentions, LEAVE THE .APP when you rename the applications.
NOTE: Spaces, versions, or the word 'Adobe' will cause problems in launching the software.
Remove InCopyFileActions.framework plug-in from InCopy/Plugins/UI. The database will download the correct plug-in, ICDTFileActions.pln, when launching.
Remove the Online folder from InCopy/Plugins
Remove the Online folder from InDesign/Plugins
Launch SpeedManger, go into Setups > Application Uploader, select root (the '/') and click ADD
Path to the InDesign and InCopy folders that you had made copies of, select both folders (not the contents, but the folders themselves), and click the SELECT button.
When InDesign and InCopy have loaded, select 'root' again and click ADD
Path to the Upload folder which contains the 'DTFiles' folder that came zipped with the MA. Select the 'DTFiles' folder and click the SELECT button
When the upload has finished, click OK to close Application Uploader. <end>
TIPS FOR TROUBLESHOOTING
A) - If you are receiving notifications when you launch DTApps that say your "Plugins are Out of Date. Expected 643, found 636" or something of the like, this indicates the configuration between DT and InDesign & InCopy are not synced. Meaning that the contents of the DTFiles folder that is loaded with NewsSpeed is showing one version of the MA, while the InDesign and InCopy that have been loaded to the database are showing another.
Which likely means that the correct DTFiles folder was not loaded with the lastest MA-Applied Adobe Applications.
B) Another mistake that we have seen users make is when they install InDesign and InCopy, then uninstall and re-install InDesign, but not INCopy. This means that InDesign doesn't have the InCopy plugins and will give the users errors:
Example:
ERROR when launching INDesign:
'Cannot load INCOPY BRIDGE UI.APLN because it requires Username. Please install Username and restart Adobe InDesign.'
I was able to get into this same state you were in by installing InDesign, then InCopy.
Then I uninstalled InDesign.
Reinstalled InDesign.
Then I ran the MAs.
When you uninstall InDesign, it removes all the InCopy plugins that were loaded when you ran the complete install of InCopy.
They are located in the InCopyWorkflow folder.
When you reinstall InDesign, it only puts two plugins in that folder.
Then when you run the MA, it adds two more plugins in that folder.
Which means you are still missing 4 plugins.
So you need to reinstall InCopy plugins for InDesign.
