Loading a new MA's
What to do first. Loading a new MA on Windows and Mac with troubleshooting tips.

Loading a new MA

Guidelines: What to do first

To load the Adobe MA, you must do so on a machine that either has a new install of InDesign and InCopy CS2, or a machine on which the applications have never been launched outside of the DTApps folder. (Starting with CS2, Adobe delivered the MA as an application bundle rather than as individual files as with the 2.x product.)

When you install the Adobe applications, by default the Adobe Installer installs to Program Files\Adobe. DTI recommends that you install to this default location, even though Windows writes to the Registry regardless. (When the MA is being installed, it reads from the Registry.)

When you install the MA on a Mac platform, you must install it to the Applications folder.

After the MA is installed to InDesign and InCopy in the prescribed locations, you must make copies of those InDesign and InCopy folders so that they can be renamed and uploaded to the database.

The DTFiles files folder will be uploaded to the database using the Application Uploader.

If you are installing these applications to a new database, first load the Adobe Applications, next install NewsSpeed, and finally load the DTFiles.

Important: Do not delete the DTFiles, InDesign, or InCopy folders if they have been uploaded to the database previously. When NewsSpeed is loaded, it creates a folder called DT in the InDesign and InCopy Plugin folders, copies files to the DTFiles folder, and makes the appropriate associations to those files. If you inadvertently delete the DT folder and files, you must reload NewsSpeed to recreate them after you complete the MA process.

Loading a new MA on Windows

To load a new MA on Windows, complete the following steps.

1. Unzip the new Adobe MA zip file to a folder of your choice.

The following folders are created: InDesign, InCopy, Update, and Release Notes.

2. Open the InDesign folder, and double click the IDCS2_Updater_Roman_Release.exe file. (The name of this file may vary depending on the MA release you are installing.)

3. Follow the prompts in the MA installer to update InDesign with the latest fixes.

4. Open the InCopy folder, and double click the ICCS2_Updater_Roman_Release.exe file. (The name of this file may vary depending on the MA release you are installing.)

Note: The Upload folder contains the DTFiles folder and is at the same directory level as the InDesign and InCopy folders. (The DTFiles folder is also found in the NewsSpeed folder and its contents are generally uploaded to the database through the Application Uploader in SpeedManager when you update your database.) The DTFiles folder contains the configuration information for the MA that you are running. Uploading the DTFiles folder to the root (/) with the Application Uploader, as well as InDesign and InCopy with the newly applied MA, eliminates the “Plug-ins Out of Date” error message when you log in. The process for uploading the DTFiles folder is explained later in this document.

5. Create a new folder named “Upload” in your DTApps folder or in the Program Files folder, or locate the Upload folder if you created it previously.

6. Copy the Adobe InDesign CS2 and InCopy CS2 folders in C:\Program Files\Adobe to the Upload folder.

Note: Do not launch the applications in these folders. They must be uploaded to the database in a pre-launch state.

7. Copy the DTFiles folder from the Adobe MA folder to the Upload folder.

8. Rename the Adobe InDesign CS2 and Adobe InCopy CS2 folders in the Upload folder to InDesign and InCopy, respectively.

Note: Spaces, version numbers, or the word “Adobe” will cause problems when the software launches. In Windows, the applications should already be named InDesign.exe and InCopy.exe.

9. In the InCopy folder, delete the InCopyFileActions.apln plug-in from InCopy\Plugins\UI. The database will download the correct plug-in (ICDTFileActions.pln) on launch.

10. Delete the Online folders from InDesign\Plugins and InCopy\Plugins.

11. Launch SpeedManager and select Setups > Application Uploader.

12. Select “root” and click Add.

13. Navigate to the Upload folder that contains the InDesign and InCopy folders that you copied. Select both folders and click Select.

14. Once the InDesign and InCopy folders have loaded, select the root (/) and click Add.

15. Navigate to the Upload folder, select the DTFiles folder, and click Select.

16. When the upload finishes, click OK to close the Application Uploader.

Loading a new MA on Macintosh

To load a new MA on Macintosh, complete the following steps.

1. Double click the .dmg file to mount it to your hard drive.

2. Select the InDesign folder and double click InDesign Updater.dmg.

3. When InDesign Updater.dmg mounts, select it and double click the InDesign Updater file to launch the InDesign MA install.

4. From the dialog, install the MA to the InDesign in the Applications folder.

5. Run the Install.

6. When the install is complete, un-mount InDesign Updater.dmg.

7. Select the InCopy folder and double click InCopy Updater.dmg.

8. When InCopy Updater.dmg mounts, select it and double click the InCopy Updater file to launch the InCopy MA install.

9. From the dialog, install the MA to the InCopy in the Applications folder.

10. Run the install.

11. When the install is complete, un-mount InCopy Updater.dmg.

12. Create a new folder or navigate to an existing one named “Update” in your Home directory.

Note: Do not launch the applications in these folders. They must be uploaded to the database in a pre-launch state.

13. Copy Adobe InDesign CS2 and Adobe InCopy CS2 from your Applications folder to the Upload folder.

14. Copy the DTFiles folder from the mounted image (the .dmg) to the Upload folder.

15. In the Upload folder, rename the Adobe InDesign CS2 and the Adobe InCopy CS2 folders to InDesign and InCopy, respectively.

Note: If you are hiding extensions in the OS, the .app extension will not be visible. If you are showing extensions, leave the .app extension when you rename the applications. Spaces, version numbers, or the word “Adobe” will cause problems when the software launches.

16. In the InCopy folder, delete the InCopyFileActions.framework plug-in from InCopy\Plugins\UI. The database will download the correct plug-in (ICDTFileActions.pln) on launch.

17. Delete the Online folder from InCopy\Plugins.

18. Delete the Online folder from InDesign\Plugins.

19. Launch SpeedManager, and click Setups > Application Uploader. Select root (/) and click Add.

20. Navigate to the copies of the InDesign and InCopy folders, select the folders, and click Select.

21. When the folders have uploaded, select root (/) and click Add.

22. Navigate to the Upload folder that contains the DTFiles folder from the MA, select the DTFiles folder, and click Select.

23. When the upload is finished, click OK to close the Application Uploader.

Troubleshooting tips

Plugins out of date

The following notification or one like it, “Plugins are Out of Date. Expected 643, found 636” indicates that the configuration between DT and InDesign and InCopy is not synchronized. In other words the contents of the DTFiles folder that loads with NewsSpeed have one version of the MA while the InDesign and InCopy that are loading to the database have another version. In all likelihood the correct DTFiles folder was not loaded with the latest MA-applied Adobe applications.

Error launching InDesign

If you receive an error when you try to launch InDesign, such as “Cannot load INCOPY BRIDGE UI.APLN because it requires Username. Please install Username and restart Adobe InDesign,” someone has likely installed InDesign and InCopy, then un-installed both applications but only re-installed InDesign. The result is that InDesign does not have the InCopy plug-ins and will generate errors.

This error can also occur if you install InDesign and InCopy, un-install and re-install InDesign, and then run the MAs.

Un-installing InDesign removes all the InCopy plug-ins that are loaded when you run a complete install of InCopy. The InCopy plug-ins are located in the InCopyWorkflow folder. Re-installing InDesign only copies two of the plug-ins to the InCopyWorkflow folder. Running the MA adds two more plug-ins. Re-installing InCopy copies four more plug-ins to the folder.
