DTI’s eWriter allows journalists and outside news contributors to submit
stories to the news database remotely using nothing more than a web browser.
The journalist logs into the news database via a secure connection using a
web browser on their palm pilot, laptop, or in an internet cafe.
Stories they have written can then be submitted to the database, along with
any media files (photos, graphics, movie or sound clips) they would like to
package with the story. Basic header information can also be sent in with
the story like keywords, production notes, category, status, and what
electronic desk the story should be saved to.
eWriter allows stories to be saved to the news database in the following
formats: InCopy native, HTML, XML, RTF, ASCII, NewsML, and Unicode. The
newspaper can decide if they want tag characters to be recognized when the
story is imported, allowing the journalist to mark what text is the
headline, the byline, the main text, or other story elements such as
suggested quickreads, pullquotes, or subheads.
If a newspaper would like their remote journalists to have full editorial
functionality from a remote location, DTI recommends implementing a Citrix
solution. Citrix uses a webserver to serve up multiple instances of an
application running simultaneously on a local server. Remote users can log
in to the system and have the exact same work environment as they would if
they were sitting at their desk in the newsroom, using nothing more than a
web browser. The Citrix solution does not even need the web browser window
to be visible once the applications are launched. Once the internet
connection is established, the remote journalist can minimize or even close
the browser login window and will see on their remote computer screen the
same work environment they would have back at the paper.
Using Citrix, remote journalists can edit, file, route, search for, and link
stories to other files in the database.
DTI’s eWriter does not require Citrix. Therefore, the customer can decide if
they would like to have remote story and story media filing capabilities to
the database using eWriter, or if they would like to upgrade to the complete
version of SpeedWriter running remotely on a Citrix server.
