The foundation of the ImageSpeed system, the DTI Graphics Database stores and manages all photos and images, maintaining the relationships between low resolution view files and high–resolution files for output. Bi-directional database links keep files that are in use from being deleted.

Benefits at a Glance

  • Seamless integration with Advertising, Editorial and Pagination databases, speeds and simplified production.
  • Eliminates the need to store multiple versions of the same graphic.
  • Maintains relational links between graphics and associated pages and ads.
  • Sophisticated, yet intuitive workflow provides the best collaborative environment for designers, photographers, composers and paginators.

The DTI Graphics Database keeps relational links between the graphic elements and stories or ads that they are related to. These links enable automatic archiving of unneeded graphics and prevents the deletion of graphics that are currently in use.

Tracking and routing functions provide sophisticated, yet easy–to–use workflow management and a way for designers, photographers, composers, paginators and librarians to browse, search and use graphics and photos from the Graphics Database. Compressed view files reduce network traffic and include only enough resolution to manipulate on the screen, including color matching, cropping, rotating, etc. At output, these are swapped with the full–resolution versions, which are compressed to reduce storage requirements and transmission times.

Designed for hierarchical storage options, including optical juke boxes, the system can handle virtually unlimited volume. Optional storage strategies, librarian tools, and searching tools can be added for long–term archive capabilities.

The Graphics Database provides both production workflow control and integrated archiving, making it the most comprehensive digital asset management system for newspapers.

Database-centered Workflow The foundation of the ImageSpeed system, the DTI Graphics Database stores and manages all photos and images, maintaining the relationships between low resolution view files and high–resolution files for output. Bi–directional database links keep files that are in use from being deleted.

Output SpeedDriver replaces low resolution versions of images with the high-resolution image for OPI output directly from the database. JPEG–compressed images are handled without decompressing them. Output to the RIPs is buffered to speed output.

Graphic Manipulation ImageSpeed integrates Adobe InDesign, enabling internally launched Photoshop to become a database client. Photos can be cropped and edited with Photoshop directly from the database, maintaining ability to search, see directories, thumbnails, full–size previews, and attach and edit captions.

Importing Graphics DTI’s PhotoWire Receiver with integration of Adobe InDesign facilitates the pre–processing of photos from wire services directly into the database. DTI’s ImageSpeed imports photos and graphics from files, CDs, or scanned images and illustrations into the database, attaching searchable header information fields.

Archive Intelligent data migration to archiving removes from the production system graphics that are not in use, according to schedules set up by system administrators. Seamless integration allows archived graphics to be searched and automatically migrated back into production. The Archive Librarian features give extensive control over the organization, key–words, and grouping of images in the database and enable searches of every word in every header field and all keywords.

Production Graphics Database clients use low–resolution view files to build ads and pages. The link to the high–resolution version is automatically maintained and never broken. Both resolution “views” are linked to the same image in the database.
