MEDIANEWS GROUP INSTALLS PBS MEDIAPLUS® CIRCULATION

System to Help Standardize Company Reporting and Streamline Operations

Minneapolis, MN, – December 13, 2005 – Publishing Business Systems, North America’s leading source for integrated enterprise–wide newspaper business software systems, today announced that MediaNews Group has licensed its MediaPlus® Circulation solution, a comprehensive system that manages all aspects of circulation. Also licensed are MediaPlus® InsertPlus, which reduces the complexity of insert planning and delivery, and MediaPlus® iServices Subscriber, a self–service application that performs online subscriber transactions.

MediaNews Group is one of the largest newspaper companies in the United States. Based in Denver, it owns and operates 40 daily newspapers in nine states with combined daily and Sunday circulation of approximately 1.7 million and 2.3 million, respectively. MediaNews Group also owns 18 weekly newspapers and numerous free publications.

"Our newspapers serve diverse audiences, from the nearly 7,700 readers of the Ukiah Daily Journal to the half–million people who pick up one of our eight Los Angeles papers every morning," said Cindy Shearon, newspaper systems analyst, MediaNews Group. "Because of how diverse our publications are, we need full–service solutions that work in both small and large markets, and also allow us to standardize reporting and our overall operations."

Available with Oracle® and Progress database compatibility, MediaPlus Circulation – which will be installed on Oracle® for MediaNews – is a revenue–generating system designed to standardize reporting and overall operations, as well as reduce expenses and streamline processes. The same can also be said of PBS‘ other solutions.

"We selected PBS because we were impressed with the ease of use and off–the–shelf functionality of their products," said Riley Suit, director of newspaper systems, MediaNews Group. "PBS has a strong track record of success and keeps pace with changes in the industry."

In addition to wanting to better manage circulation, MediaNews Group was also seeking new ways to serve advertisers and subscribers. "Inserts are a growing area, and today’s advertisers want to target their inserts by both demographics and location. InsertPlus makes it easy for us to do that, as well as manage customer information, generate reports and more."

MediaNews Group also plans to install iServices Subscriber, a self-service application that allows subscribers to manage their own account information online so that customer service representatives can spend more time generating new business, rather than processing routine requests.

"The considerable experience and industry knowledge of the employees at PBS set us apart, and we leverage that expertise to continually enhance our core solutions," said PBS President Ron Bernier. "Another thing we do well is to develop complementary solutions such as InsertPlus and iServices Subscriber to meet more specific business needs of news organizations like MediaNews. We’ve been setting the industry standard in product development for more than 20 years and will continue to do so."
