NORTH JERSERY MEDIA GROUP LICENSES MEDIAPLUS® CIRCULATION SOFTWARE

Publications to be unified on a single circulation system in an Oracle® environment

Minneapolis, MN, – October 5, 2004 – Publishing Business Systems (PBS), North America’s leading source for integrated enterprise–wide newspaper business software systems, has signed an agreement with North Jersey Media Group to license its MediaPlus® Circulation system.

PBS MediaPlus Circulation software will be installed within the company’s Daily, Weekly, and Specialty Publications divisions. The Daily Division includes the award–winning newspapers, The Record and Herald News, which have a combined daily circulation of 181,961 and a Sunday circulation of 222,701. The Weekly Division represents 35 community newspaper titles having a paid circulation of 54,792 and a free distribution of 514,720. The Specialty Publications Division represents several niche publications such as The Parent Paper and NJ COPS, as well as special–interest books.

As a growing independent and family–owned publishing company, North Jersey Media Group was looking to replace three separate circulation applications with a single system that would support all of its publications across three divisions. According to Daily Division VP/Circulation Robert O’Sullivan, “It is time to use the latest technology available so that we can best meet the needs of all divisions. PBS offers state–of–the–art software that will enable us to unite all of our publications into a single system.”

The company plans to take advantage of the common database for all publications and the vast improvement in reporting that PBS represents. Karl von Jena, I.T. staff member and Project Manager for the PBS installation, notes, “In addition to simplifying support and unifying operational processes across the divisions, the functionality of the system will give Circulation several key business advantages.” For example, von Jena said that with the reporting tools in MediaPlus Circulation combined with MediaPlus InSight business intelligence software, the company will be able to generate reports faster and more accurately than ever before. These tools will allow the company to review factors impacting retention, perform market penetration analyses, identify emerging trends, etc., far faster and more consistently than ever before.

Another key element of the PBS system is its support of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) through features such as ListMatch Plus and Target Marketing. With ListMatch Plus, the company can easily import external lists into their database to enhance their demographics and reach new prospects. With Target Marketing, a unique feature in MediaPlus Circulation, the company can segment markets by household or lifestyle demographics and generate targeted marketing campaigns. Target Marketing will then aid in the distribution of these campaigns (by direct mail, telemarketing, or e–mail delivery), and help to measure results by tracking and analyzing campaign activity.

Interfaces are another key aspect of the system that will work well in the company’s environment. “We want the system to be fully integrated with the other production and financial systems we have in use,” noted William George, Circulation Information Systems Manager and a key member of the project team. “We will take full advantage of the detailed documentation PBS has prepared for all interfaces.” The company plans interfaces with financial systems such as SAP and NOVA, as well as production systems such as NES and Syncronex.

North Jersey Media Group has licensed MediaPlus Circulation solutions to run in an Oracle® environment. “We already have a significant investment in both Oracle® software and support staff for our other major systems,” said von Jena. “We are pleased to see PBS offering support for their systems in an Oracle® environment.”
