Österreich, a Fellner Medien national daily, is transforming the newspaper business in Vienna, Austria. A young, innovative publication designed as a lifestyle product, Österreich is a glossy, compact, tabloid that blends the look and feel of a magazine with the topicality of a national, regional and international newspaper.

Veteran magazine publisher Wolfgang Fellner was confident the Österreich concept would revolutionize the traditional newspaper-and it is. Creating a print product that features daily news with an upscale magazine look has won Österreich the lead in its subscription-driven market. Subscription requests for this young publication are increasing every day-more than 80,000 within the first eight months. Fellner developed Österreich, supported by online news and television, to be the largest source of news information in Austria, and to do it at a sustainable cost per copy.

WHAT THEY NEEDED: Fellner had to find a formula that would make the new daily newspaper a leader in a future market. He also needed to provide advertisers with high-quality design and production while dealing with the same challenging lead times traditional daily newspapers confront.

Österreich, with a circulation of approximately 315,000, recognized the need to offer a more appealing product than its growing online and mobile media competition. What is Österreich's strategy? Stay ahead of market demands by attracting a younger audience.

To increase revenue and secure a footing in the market, Fellner wanted an accessible combined print and Web appearance that could release the news immediately and keep up with the demands of the paper's growing infrastructure to deliver it.

DTI SOLUTIONS: Digital Technology International's experienced personnel understood Österreich's need for efficient, high-quality design on a daily deadline. DTI's WebSpeed®, NewsSpeed® and ClassSpeed® products became the center of the Österreich newsroom.

"When we set out to introduce a brand new concept for a daily newspaper into the market, we knew our success depended on collaboration with the most innovative partners in the media industry," says Gert Edlinger, managing director of Österreich.

"The successful launch of our daily newspaper-magazine concept required maximum flexibility, complete integrity and unqualified professionalism in all areas, which is why we chose the DTI editorial system. It helped us take Österreich from zero to full speed in just a few weeks."

Using tools from DTI partner Escenic, Österreich and DTI created and implemented the newspaper-magazine's website as part of the DTI solution. DTI gave Österreich seamless management of all content, regardless of platform and while publishing simultaneously to print and the Internet. Österreich produces standard news pages and their glossy equivalents side by side within the DTI system.

Österreich is a newspaper-industry early adopter of DTI's Caché database, giving its users the power of multi-media collaboration. Including special sections, late editions, Madonna (Österreich's weekly women's magazine), and other products, the publication's journalists produce 300-400 unique pages a day. What's more, Österreich is the only publication in Austria to have a television studio in its newsroom, featuring live, breaking, on-site news, available online.

A key component-and one of the many reasons Österreich can produce at such high levels-is DTI's integration of several powerful Adobe products. DTI has customized these Adobe products, including InDesign and InCopy, into AdSpeed® and NewsSpeed® to give multiple users throughout the company the power to collaborate on the same content at the same time, increasing the efficiency and synergy of the workflow.
